HLPF Side Event - Climate, Fragility and the SDGs: Lessons from Lake Chad

10 July 2019
Delegation of the EU to the United Nations

This side event will draw on lessons from the field and expert inputs to discuss the purpose and value of assessing linked climate and fragility issues in order to promote peaceful and sustainable development. Due to limited spaces available, please register by Friday 5 July.

Climate change and conflict are already reversing development gains and impeding prospects for achieving the SDGs. Yet many questions require further understanding to inform efforts to address these risks:

  • What challenges to development arise from the convergence of climate change and fragility?
  • To what extent are these risks being acknowledged in SDG interventions on the ground?
  • How specifically can addressing climate, peace and stability advance the Agenda 2030?
  • Which SDG entry points can tackle climate security and development challenges together?

To discuss these questions and identify ways forward, the EU Delegation to the UN and adelphi are convening a breakfast meeting, drawing on lessons from the field and expert inputs to discuss the purpose and value of assessing linked climate and fragility issues in order to promote peaceful, sustainable development. These discussions will focus on the Lake Chad as a case study, and reflect how lessons learnt from this region can be drawn for other regions, with a particular view on what the interlinked nature of these risks means for implementing the SDGs.
